There are a variety of reasons that people decide to begin psychotherapy or counseling. While some people start therapy because they are feeling depressed or anxious, others may feel as if they need therapy to help them deal with relationship problems, family problems, self-esteem issues, stress, physical or sexual abuse, or other traumatic or difficult events that happen in their lives. Therapy or counseling may also be helpful for those who feel like they have lost meaning in their lives or are feeling "stuck in a rut". The reasons people seek out therapy vary greatly from person to person. If you feel ready to begin therapy or counseling, it's important that you find a therapist with which you feel comfortable. When talking with potential therapists or counselors, feel free to ask questions about their background and style of therapy to ensure that it's a good fit for you.
What does therapy entail?
Typically, therapy or counseling entails weekly sessions that last about an hour. Some people find it helpful to see a therapist more than once a week as it can provide additional support as well as allow a more in-depth exploration of the issues you are dealing with. While some issues can be resolved in a short amount of time, therapy or counseling that takes a well-rounded or depth approach usually requires a longer period of time. A psychoanalytic or depth approach to therapy examines the more deeper issues or feelings that can be explored through how we unconsciously react to various situations or people based on our interpersonal history. Incorporating dream work in therapy as well as creative expression such as art work or music are other ways to deepen one's understanding of themselves and bring meaning to their suffering and their lives.
How do I choose a therapist or counselor?
It's important that you feel comfortable with the therapist you choose. It can be helpful to talk to potential therapists or counselors first to get an idea if it would be a good fit. You may ask questions about the therapist's education, background, and training as well as how they work with patients. Not all therapists will be a good match for your needs and personality. I offer brief initial consultations by phone at no charge. Although this allows us to see if we might be a good match, I usually encourage people just beginning therapy to start with three or four sessions to allow both of us some time to determine if we would work well together.
Can I use my insurance for psychotherapy?
Yes. While I am not an in-network provider with insurance panels, you may be able to submit claims for out-of-network coverage, depending on your benefits. I would be glad to talk with you about the process and billing options. Please call my office for more information.
